Why lossless format swap?
Different DJ ecosystems favor different lossless formats. Pioneer gear prefers AIFF and WAV. Denon's Engine DJ works great with FLAC. If you're switching setups or playing across multiple platforms, you may need your library in a different lossless format. Since all these formats store the same PCM audio data (just in different containers), converting between them is mathematically lossless — the audio coming out is bit-for-bit identical to what went in.
How to lossless format swap
- 1Identify which lossless format your new setup prefers
- 2Drop your existing lossless files onto the converter
- 3Select the target format (AIFF, WAV, or FLAC)
- 4Download your converted files
- 5Import into your new software and re-analyze
Tips
- Pioneer CDJs: AIFF or WAV recommended
- Denon SC series: FLAC works great and saves space
- Apple ecosystem: M4A for native compatibility
- Keep your originals — storage is cheap, re-purchasing isn't
Frequently asked questions
- Is converting between lossless formats really lossless?
- Yes, 100%. AIFF, WAV, and FLAC all store the same PCM audio data. Converting between them is like changing the container — the audio inside is identical.
- Why not just use WAV everywhere?
- WAV works everywhere but has unreliable metadata and large file sizes. AIFF has better tagging and FLAC compresses 30-50%. The best format depends on your workflow.
